      <image:title>Crow House |</image:title>
<image:caption>Crow House is the handcrafted home built by the artist and craftsman Henry Varnum Poor (1887-1970) just west of the Hudson River, approximately 35 miles north of New York City. Starting in 1920, Poor created Crow House from the ground up, using local materials, working largely alone. He lived there with his family until his death, creating his famous pottery, well known painting, unique furniture, designs for fresco, textiles, and tile murals. Crow House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. It is located within an established area of open space currently used for outdoor recreation and it is on the historic and scenic South Mountain Road. It was the center of an artists’ colony that included Burgess Meredith, John Houseman, Ruth Reeves, Maxwell Anderson, Milton Caniff, Paulette Goddard, Kurt Weill, Lotte Lenya, Sidney Simon and many other well-known artists, activists, composers, and writers. Now owned by the town of Ramapo in Rockland County, New York, Crow House is not open to the public. Crow House needs to be stabilized and restored so that others may experience this modern idyll and learn about the person who made it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Get Involved | - Message from Teru Simon, President</image:title>
<image:caption>April 1, 2023 CALL TO ACTION: Please write a ‘letter of concern.’ The Henry Varnum Poor Foundation is seeking ‘Letters of Concern’ to protect and save the Henry Varnum Poor property in New City, NY (also known as Crow House). This historic artist’s home and studio is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Town of Ramapo, NY bought the house with a NY State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) acquisition grant in 2007, with the stated purpose of maintaining the building, and opening it to the public. They have not fulfilled these obligations, have neglected Crow House for 17 years and as a result it is in a significant state of disrepair. It is important to note that in 2007 when Ramapo purchased this property Crow House was in excellent condition - filled with Poor’s woodworking, hand-made tiles, murals, and studios. It was a functional home and working environment with heat and water. To view a gallery of images of Crow House from 2007, click here. Below, please find the information about Henry Varnum Poor and Crow House, and information about the history of involvement of all the parties.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Henry Varnum Poor Foundation to Host Webinar Lecture About Marion Dorn Press Release Date: February 13, 2025 Event Date: April 10, 2025 at 11am (Eastern) New City – The Henry Varnum Poor Foundation will host a webinar presentation by Dr. Christine Boydell about Marion Dorn (1896-1964) on April 10th at 11am (Eastern). Dorn, a freelance textile artist, was married to Poor from 1919 – 1923 and was by his side while he built Crow House, Poor’s hand built home on South Mountain Road in New City, NY. When the newlyweds Marion Dorn and Henry Varnum Poor travelled across the country in 1919 to begin their married life together in New York, neither could have known just how short the partnership would be. In 1923 the pair divorced and Marion would settle in London. But those four years were crucial to the careers of both artists: Henry designed and built Crow House and Marion established what became a long and very successful career as a textile designer.
